Microsoft’s first Windows 11 security update of 2026 broke shutdowns and some Remote Desktop sign-ins. Microsoft has released emergency out-of-band fixes via Windows Update, including KB5077744 and KB5077797.
Windows 11 KB5074109 causes a black screen on some PCs, including those with an Nvidia GPU, and also freezes Outlook if you use POP.
Microsoft has released Windows 10 emergency update KB5077796 to fix Remote Desktop sign-in failures caused by recent Patch Tuesday updates.
That stubborn Windows 10 holdout number divides between those with PCs eligible to upgrade and those that aren’t. There are hundreds of millions of users in each of those camps. One question regularly asked is whether Microsoft will force upgrades on those with eligible PCs. No sign of that yet — but some Windows users are not so lucky.
